The NTSB has released a transcript of the cockpit recorder from the February 12, 2009 plane crash which killed 50 people near the Buffalo airport. Go here for the transcript. In addition, here is a good article from the AP, regarding the NTSB investigation surrounding the accident.
Basically, this is an issue of pilot error, all the way. The two pilots were not that well trained, did not have that much experience, and weren’t paying attention. One thing which struck me in the AP article was the salaries these regional pilots make. The first officer, only 24 years old, was making around $24,000. The captain was making approximately $55,000. That’s all?? For some reason, I thought an airline pilot would be making more than that. Apparently not. I mean, I know truck drivers who make more than that. A lot of truck drivers. So, I guess my point would be to the drivers…. you’re not getting paid an insignificant amount of money, not compared to some other professions. Be professional, take your job seriously, do it safely, do it correctly. These two pilots didn’t do that.
